JPI Urban Europe
Beginning with the JPI Urban ERA-NET Cofund Smart Urban Futures Call (ENSUF) call and other calls that followed, including the JPI Urban Sustainable Global Initiative (SUGI)/Food-Water-Energy (FEW) Nexus, the JPI Urban Europe / National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Sustainable and Liveable Cities and Urban Areas, there was considerable overlap between the conception of the Urban Transformations portfolio and the focus of JPI Urban Europe. A total of 17 JPI Urban projects were included in the Urban Transformations portfolio.
Following the initial inclusion of two projects from Pilot Call 2 (Irene: Improving the Robustness of Urban Electricity Networks and Resilient Cities: Industrial Network and Institutional Perspectives on Economic Growth and Well-being), a further eight projects from the JPI Urban ERA-NET Cofund Smart Urban Futures Call (ENSUF) were added, including:
- Learning Loops in the Public Realm
- Cities of Making: Resources for Activating New Urban Industry through Technology, Spatial Design and Transition Governance
- Governance and the Local Integration of Migrants and Europe’s Refugees (GLIMER)
- Smart Urban Intermediaries – Trans-European Research, Learning and Action
- Smart Shrinkage Solutions – Fostering Resilient Cities in Inner Peripheries of Europe (3S RECIPE)
- Early Warning Service for Urban Pluvial Floods for and by Citizens and City Authorities (FloodCitySense)
- Urban Education Live (UEL)
- Bright Futures: Reinventing European Industrial Towns and Challenging Dominant Post-Industrial Discourses
Following this, the JPI Urban Sustainable Global Initiative (SUGI)/Food-Water-Energy (FEW) Nexus call, including a number of ESRC-funded projects, were approved. With a focus on developing more equitable and efficient approaches to urban resource management, the research focused primarily on a selection of European cities but also featured partnerships in Africa, the Americas, Asia and the Gulf. A total of seven projects from this call were included in the Urban Transformations portfolio:
